My Worst Nightmare

We knew it would happen eventually, and it finally has. My worst nightmare was recently announced:   There is no bye weekend for LSU football during the month of October 2013.   You don't have to be a football fan to understand the gravity of that unfortunate fact. Baton Rouge is a football town. When there is a home game, everything shuts down. Granted, I don't exactly "bleed purple and gold," but I do understand and appreciate the level

Behind the Curtain

"This is Halloween! This is Halloween!"   I simply can not think of Halloween without the haunting tunes of The Nightmare Before Christmas ringing in my ears. Like many of us "Halloween enthusiasts" this is one of my favorite movies. I often wonder if the opening scene is what planted the idea of a Halloween parade in my mind to begin with.   Our parade, while quite different from the one in the movie, was just as exciting and thrilling

Baton Rouge Crime

There is a reason that crime scene tape is used as a standard Halloween decoration. Crime is scary. And if you live in Baton Rouge, you should be even more afraid of it than the average person.   According to NeighborhoodScout.com, Baton Rouge has a crime index rating of 3, with 100 being the BEST possible score. The website further explains,   “With a crime rate of 67 per one thousand residents, Baton Rouge has one of the highest crime

Halfoween

Tomorrow, May 1st, marks the recently declared “holiday” of Halfoween – the annual half way mark to Halloween. I’m sure this is no surprise, but this new additional way to celebrate the most wicked day of the year is something I’m pretty jazzed about.   For those of you unfamiliar with this springtime treat, check out the full description from Urban Dictionary (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=halfoween). Halfoween customs

Resolutions

Believe in something unbelievable.   Be less concerned with the opinions of others and more concerned with my own.   Be more affectionate with my loved ones.   Be more considerate of others.   Be more patient with my son.   Be more thankful.   Be on time for work at least 3 days a week.   Be realistic.   Fight less with my mother and sister.   Find the good in people.   Get healthy.   Get organized.

Gratitude

Having just celebrated the Thanksgiving holiday, it seems fitting to begin by reflecting on the things for which I am most grateful. The obvious things come to mind: family, friends, and health. In today's economy, I'm sure a lot of people like me are thankful for employment. On the other end of the spectrum, I'm sure many are thankful for their last meal. It's easy to let life get in the way and consequently take life for granted. Missing the

Scarecrow

The scarecrow is one of the most iconic harvest images. Just thinking of the word "harvest" brings to mind images of fields of corn, farm houses, barns, and yes, scarecrows. His purpose is to, well, scare the crows away. Crows... those flying thieves of crops our farmers work so hard to produce. Living in the city, we don't get to see these images too often, however we do have our fair share of "scarecrows" and "crows."   The word "harvest"

Halloween Riddle

Is that the cackle of a witch I hear?   Is that the moan of a ghost? Oh dear...   The rattling of chains in the dark of night   Pumpkins aglow...now that's a sight   Black bats fly, silhouetting the moon   A hoot owl answers, "Soon Soon"   As dusk approaches little creatures appear   Wandering door to door...grinning ear to ear.   What night could this be? Did you guess it yet?   Think hard...You've already

Thanks

In exactly 4 weeks, it will be time for the first ever Baton Rouge Halloween Parade.  Words truly cannot express the gratitude I have for all of the people who have helped make this dream of mine into a reality. As I sit here thinking about this blog post, the last of which I will write before the parade, only 2 words come to mind.   THANK YOU.   by Kelley Criscoe Stein
